Sally Davison, olet englantilainen ja haluat tehdä tanssiteoksen Suomen kansalliseepoksen Kalevalan inspiroimana. Miksi?

- Monissa kulttuureissa on omat maailman luomiseen liittyvät mytologiansa ja näissä tarinoissa on paljon yhtäläisyyksiä, vaikka ne ovatkin syntyneet eri maissa ja kulttuureissa. Tarinoissa tuntuu olevan arkkityyppisiä eli tavallaan yleispäteviä teemoja, joihin me kaikki voimme samaistua. Nämä kansalliset myytit liittyvät aina vahvasti sen paikan luontoon, missä ne ovat syntyneet. Vaikka minä en olekaan syntynyt Suomessa, olen aina kokenut suomalaisen luonnon vahvasti omakseni ja minulle Kalevala on inspiroiva taru josta saan kuvallisia, äänellisiä ja liikkeellisiä vaikutteita luodakseni tanssiteatteriteoksen.

Mistä Aurora Borealis kertoo?

- Aurora Borealis on tanssiteatteriteos, joka hakee inspiraatiota Kalevalasta. Nimi tarkoittaa muuten revontulia. Teos ei ole mikään suora Kalevala-tulkinta, vaan pikemminkin matka kalevalaisessa maisemassa ja sen synnyttämissä arkkityypeissä. Me kohtaamme tarinan unenkaltaisen sielun tanssijoiden luomien kuvien kautta.

Minkälainen on Aurora Borealiksen esiintyjäryhmä?

- Aurora Borealiksessa on mukana yhdeksän tanssijaa, jotka valitsin heidän keskinäisen energiansa perusteella ja sen perusteella, missä roolissa heidät näin. Moninaisuus kuvastaa tätä ryhmää, koska ihmisillä on erilainen tausta ja toiset ovat kokeneempia kuin toiset. Tämä moninaisuus on todellinen aarreaitta, mistä voi ammentaa teokseen vaikka mitä sitä kautta, että työskentelemällä yhdessä yksilön osaamisesta tulee ryhmän osaamista. Osalla ryhmäläisistä on vahva musikaalinen tausta ja sitä hyödynnetään teoksen äänimaailman luomisessa. Ylipäätään me käytämme teoksen luomisessa sekä rytmiä, ääntä että liikettä.

Sally, olet Kaaos Companyn taiteellinen johtaja. Ryhmän tavoitteena on kehittyä integroiduksi ammattitanssiryhmäksi, jollaisia on monissa maissa. Millaisena näet tällaisten ryhmien roolin tai tehtävän? Miksi tarvitsemme integroidun ammattitanssiryhmän myös Suomeen?

- Taiteen tekemisessä tuntuu olevan luonnollinen kehityskaari, että syntyy uusia taiteen tekemisen tapoja. Integroitu tanssi tarjoaa tällaisia uusia mahdollisuuksia.  Suomessa näyttää aika olevan kypsä ammattimaiselle ryhmälle, joka on avoin erityyppisille tanssijoille, kaikenlaiselle liikkeelle ja ajatustavalle. Tällaisesta ryhmästä tulisi osa kansainvälistä taiteen kenttää, joka jo tunnustaa tämän tyyppisen työskentelyn arvon.

In English

Sally Davison, you are English and want to do a dance piece inspired of the Finnish national epic. Why?

- Many cultures have creation myths and there can be many similarities within stories even though they arise from different countries. The myths seem to contain archetypal themes that we can all relate to. The myths are always very strongly connected to the nature of the place in which they are born. Even though I was not born here I have a strong connection to the nature in Finland and I find the Kalevala an inspiring tale from which to draw images, sounds and movement to create a dance theatre piece.

What is Aurora Borealis about?

- Aurora Borealis is a dance theatre piece inspired by the Kalevala. Journeying into the archetypal mind through the spirit of the land from which the story was born. We encounter the dream like state of the myth through the images produced by the dancers.

Can you tell something about the people in the work group?

- The people have been chosen for this project because of the energetic quality I see between them and the character they represent in the piece. Diversity is the foundation of this group as people have varied backgrounds and experience. This creates a rich container from which many resources can be draw for the piece as the individual knowledge becomes group knowledge through working together. Some of the people in this group have a strong musical background and that will be used to created a sound scape for the piece. We will be working with rhythm sound and movement to create the piece.

Sally, you are the Artistic Director of Kaaos Company. The company's aim is to develop to a professional integrated dance company, similar to those in many countries. How do you see the role or the mission of an integrated professional dance company? Why do we need one also in Finland?

- It seems a natural development in the process of creating art that new ways of presenting work is developed. Integrated dance offers such new possibilities. Creating a professional company that is open to different bodies and minds seems like the next step to take in Finland so that it can be part of the international art scene that already recognizes the value of this type of work.
